Space Wolf Achievements!

So I woke up this morning to something unusual in my email. Skarvald the Troll-faced over at Wolves for the Wolf God has been a busy little bee. He has whipped up some Space Wolf Achivements. If you have played any video games in the past few years you know what achievements are.

I'm not going to go into much detail of what the achievements are. I don't want to go through them and then have you go through them again when you pop over to WftFG to read the full post (you will go read the article wont you?)

Space Wolf Forge World Dread: Done!

I've been slowing down on my hobby lately. I went from having a month of posts ready to go to nothing. I am currently writing this on the 19th and it will be posted on the 20th, and I got nothing for the 22nd.

Anywho, I finally finished the tiny little bits on my Space Wolves Forge World dreadnought. I really haven't seen too many of these painted on the internet, but I think it looks pretty awesome.

Basically...

So with my new Grey Knights army, I have decided I have such a low model count, I was going to splurge and buy resin bases for the whole army. I wasn't sure what I wanted until I heard about Fantascape on the Screaming Heretic Podcast.

What I decided to go with was the Gothic Ruins. Now one of the reasons I really like these bases is because the prices on the website include tax and shipping, so even though I am buying from overseas, I don't have to worry about outrageous shipping prices.

So without any further adieu,

Space Wolf Forge World Dread: Part II

So a couple of  weeks ago I posted my four Space Wolves dreadnoughts and a week or so ago I posted an update on my Forge World Space Wolves dreadnought. This week I have another update on that same dreadnought.

So since last time, I have painted a lot of the details. In fact, I would say that the body of the dread is done. The only thing I really want to finish up on the body itself is the lense on the multimelta arm.

Book Review: The Outcast Dead

I've been having some bad luck with the Black Library lately. I haven't really liked the last two books I've read. Unfortunately The Outcast Dead is one of those books.

So this is the story of an astropath named Kai Zulane. he has had a bad year due to the fact that the last ship he was on had a Geller field failure and everyone on board died except him and the navigator. Due to the trauma of this, he can't seem to send messages anymore. So he is being sent back to (not yet holy) Terra to see if he can be salvaged as an astropath. If not, hes gonna be tossed into the astronomican.

One of the things I really didn't like about this story was that the main character seemed like a bit of a d-bag. I really just didn't like him. Ever. I have read books where the "protagonist" was kind of unlikable but usually there is some redeeming end to the story. I'm sure the author tried to do that, but I was really just fed up with Kai by the end of the story.

And the winner is...

sonoftaurus

This of course is in reference to the Inagural Three Color Minimum Inter-blog Give Away. Dave from Gone to Ground and I asked people to post a quote to go along with this picture.

And sonoftaurus won with the quote, "That'll do squid, that'll do."

So the lucky winner needs to head over to G2G and contact Dave so you can get your prize and I hope you have a very happy Orkzmas.

Did I Mention I Like Dreadnoughts?

I am totally going to use my love of Dreads as an excuse for being a cheesy bastard. I am planning to run three Grey Knights Dreadnoughts.

So I bought one of the Forge World Grey Knights dread, and then bought the body for a second dread. Then I bought a Venerable Dreadnought because I thought I could make him look like a Grey Knight dread without too much trouble.

Space Wolf Forge World Dread: Part I

So here is my first swing at my Forge World Space Wolf Dreadnought. This model is soooooo cool.

I've never really been one to think about blessings in disguise, but I think that it happened with this guy. He recently fell on the ground and shattered. The legs came off the base, and the two legs separated from the hips!

Now while the legs breaking wasn't all that great (although it was pretty easy to fix) it did give me a good reason to go back and paint things while he wasn't glued together.

RAID!

I really feel that I need a can of Raid! every time I see this guy!

So my wife has a Necron army, and so I bought the new book when it came out. I have decided that even if she doesn't wan't to play her Necrons, I will. With that in mind, I decided I wanted to get my wife (totally not for me) a model that I'd to her for Christmas.

A Tale of Four Dreadnoughts

So here we go again. I'm back to the Space Wolves, and this time I am doing one of my favorite types of minis in the 40k universe. Dreadnoughts!

I know I can't field all of these guys in a list (looks like I need to play some Apocalypse games!), but I love the look of these guys.

Pieces of Eight!

Well here we are. Finally done with my Dwarf Pirates (sort of). I figured when would be a better time to post these guys than the day before Thanksgiving (at least for those of us in the U.S. at least) because I am very thankful that I found these guys in a used mini bin at the FLGS.

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

Yo Ho Ho!

This was going to be two posts, but I just wasn't sure I could subject you to even more posts of Dwarf Pirates (my wife has informed me that not everyone is as into Dwarf Pirates as I am).

A Bit of a Left Turn

So a while back I bought a box of the Dwarf Berserkers from Avatars of War. Well they have been sitting in the box for a couple of months now and I decided to put them together.

Here they are. Not bad for $33.

Book Review: Deathwing

I don't remember exactly when I first heard of this anthology, but I did hear about it and I decided I wanted it. I checked all the Half Price Books in the Austin area (there are a bunch), but I did not find the book. I then went to Amazon, and I did find it, used, and for about cover price. I was happy with that and ordered it.

Deathwing is an anthology that is a bit odd as it is sort of a second printing. The first printing had seven stories, but this printing has ten. I'm not sure why they did it, but I knew about this before hand and opted for the one with more stories.

I have got to say that I was a little disappointed because I thought, due to the title, that this would be a book about Dark Angels, but I was wrong. There were only two stories about Dark Angels.

Another Dark Angel Completed.

One of the best things about have a bit of a back log of posts for this blog is that when I say stuff like, "I'm just waiting of some bits to finish this guy off," I can sometimes get the bits in hand, paint them, and have a completed mini before the original post goes up on the blog. This is one of those times.

Its so easy it outta be criminal

That's how I feel about this contest. Check out the official rules over at Gone to Ground, and then come back to enter to win!

What you can win is a Finecast Ork Warboss with Attack Squig. I start painting this guy and detailed it in the posts here, here, here, here, and here.

Here again are the final pictures.

A-head of the Game

So this guy is done for the moment. I really think he turned out really well.

I did this guy's cloak in the opposite pattern of the last Chapter Master I painted

Dark Angles Thunder Hammer

Well here are some pictures of my next project. I am apparently taking a little break from the Space Wolves. I think it is a good thing. I've been getting a bit tired of all the blue, so something new is different.

Inaugural Three Color Minimum Inter-blog Giveaway

So a while back I won a contest held by a great blog called Gone to Ground.

I decided that I wanted to give back to G2G so I painted up an Ork Warboss with attack squig.

Dave over at G2G decided he wanted to hold a joint give away, and insisted that it be called the "Inaugural Three Color Minimum Inter-blog Giveaway" (such a catchy name).

So jump over to Gone to Ground to check out the rules, and come back to vote.

Have a good one!

Avast!

I am head over heels in love with the Dwarf Pirates I picked up. I sat down recently to put some paint on them, and here are some WiP shots.

Teaser of my next project

Unconciously I have moved away from my Space Pups for a bit. I think I need a little bit of a break and it was fun to paint something other than blue/grey. The green and red were a lot of fun to paint. So much so that I am apparently painting some more red.

Yaaaaar!

So last weekend when I went into one of the FLGS to pick up the Necron codex, I had heard that someone had dropped off a lot of WHFB stuff for the owner to sell.

I went poking through the box and found these! 15 Dwarf pirates, yaaar!

A pic of the whole gang!

Necrons: A Fluffy Persepctive

So I purchased the new Necron book on Saturday because my wife has a Necron army gathering dust on one of the shelves of the closet in our office. No, really I bought it for her. Honestly (not really).

I got to sit down Saturday evening and do a good read through of the fluff because I knew it was going to be a departure from the 3rd edition fluff, and here is my summary of it.

60 Million-ish years ago the Necrontyr were on their home planet that had a very messed up star. This caused the life expectency of your average Necrontyr to be very veriable, but usually very short. So they developted this emo-like fetish with death and the afterlife.

As the Necrontyr empire spread out to occupy most of the galaxy they became very factious, and the ruler of the empire, known as the Silent King, decided that they needed a cause that the entire race could rally behind, so he picked a fight with the Old Ones. Bad idea.

Book Review: Iron Hands

So a few weeks back I just happened to be tooling around online and just happened to go to the Black Library site to check out the upcoming releases. Imagine my surprise when I see that Black Library is offering free shipping! This is a big deal to me because there were a number of Print on Demand books that I was looking at, but it just costs so much to have them shipped overseas.

So I snatched up the debt card and ordered me some books. The first one I sat down to read was Iron Hands by Jonathan Green.

In Iron Hands we see the beginning of Abbadon's 13th Black Crusade. The Iron Hands chapter home world of Medusa sits right in the path of the despoilers campaign so the space marines are preparing for war. Iron-Father Gdolkin's plans for glory are derailed when the Mechanicus calls in an old debt with the iron hands and Gdolkin is sent to repay the debt.

Donation Update Part 2

Here's a quick update on my Dark Angels commander. I've finished the body, and now it's time for his backpack.

Donation Update

So I've been working the past couple of nights on my Dark Angles commander that my buddy gave me. I think he is coming along very well.

Book Review: Embedded

So this is a bit off topic for this blog. It is not 40k or Warhammer Fantasy Battle, or miniaure related in any way, but I am going to post it any way. I just got done reading Dan Abnett's book Embedded.

So this is Dan Abnett's first non-40k sci-fi novel from what I understand. It takes place in the near-future where things are similar enough to what we have in the present day, but still strange enough to make this a sci-fi novel.

One of the strengths of this book is the way Abnett has created his own lingo for everything. It reminds me of Neuromancer or Blade Runner (or Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep if you feel better about it). For me this gives an intimate feeling to the universe. It makes me think a little bit about every day items or discussions, and gets me to buy into the story a bit more.

A Donation

So a friend of mine is dealing with his addiction to Games Workshop. He had cut himself off cold turkey by selling all of his armies, but the insidiousness of the plastic crack appears to be too much for him. He bought himself the Orge Kingdoms battalion box set, and was wavering between starting a Dark Angles army, or a Tau army. In the end it appears that he is going with Tau and as a result he has donated a Dark Angles Company Master in fine cast to me.

As I am a lover of all things with a 3+ save, I plan on painting this guy up next. Hope it goes well.

Spray Date

Well a buddy and I are going to get together for what I have laughingly dubbed a "spray date." We are going to get together, watch some college football and paint some minis (it is not nearly as gay as it sounds).

In order to get ready for taking all of my stuff over to his place, I am breaking out the air brush and spraying some guys in order to be ready to paint once I am over at his house.

Sky Claws: A Look Back

Well, it has been a wild ride the past few weeks putting these guys together. I think they came out really well. Here are some photos of all of the Sky Claws I have painted.

Monday, October 17, 2011

It's the end of the Sky Claws as we know it.

And I feel fine.

So here are the last two dudes.  I kitted one out with a power swords, and one with a chain sword.

Musings on Sky Claws

So a friend of mine asked me the other day how many points of Space Wolves I own. I replied with a rough estimate of 4000 points (I bet I could tool it up to 6000 easy) and that got me to thinking about putting together an army list for my entire army.

So because I am working on Sky Claws at the moment, I put those into Army Builder first, and I realized that I messed up. I made one dude with a flamer, one dude with a plasma gun and a third guy with a plasma pistol. The problem is that you can only have one of those per unit. With a smallest unit size of five, I didn't have enough guys built to field three units. I'm two short.

Book Review: Chapter's Due

Well the other night I finally finished the latest Ultramarines book, Chapter's Due. I bought it when it first came out in paperback, but I was hesitant because I wasn't very happy with the last book.

Imagine my surprise when this book turned out to be really good! This is pretty much the end of the story arc that was started in 2002 with Storm of Iron. This is the ultimate battle between Ultramarines 4th Company Captain Uriel Ventris and the Iron Warriors Warmaster Honsou.

I was really a little bit worried as I read this book because it felt from the beginning as if this was to be the ultimate show down between Honsou and Ventris. And I really didn't know who to root fore. I like Honsou better than I like Ventris (he is a smurf after all), but I knew that the Ultramarines couldn't lose this fight. The author did a good job with making both characters shine.

Secret Project: Complete!

Well here we go. This guy is done. I really had a blast painting him, but I'm pretty sure I do not want an entire Ork army. I think I would go nuts trying to paint 100 of these guys. I just don't think I'm creative enough to make them all look like individuals.

Anywho, here are some pics.

Secret Project: WiP 4

Well I've been truckin' along on this Ork. He has been fun to paint. All I have left after this pole is his base.

Wednesday, October 5, 2011

Secret Project: WiP 3

So here we are in the middle of what I am referring to as Ork Week. Its kinda like Shark Week from the Discovery Channel, but I don't have Mike Rowe narrate it.

Monday, October 3, 2011

Secret Project: WiP 1

So I put an hour or so into my super secret project. This time I have worked on the head of the Warboss and the squig.

More Complete Sky Claws

Well here we go. I got some time to finish up some more of my Sky Claws. Here are three more of just the standard guys.

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Super Secret Project

Well, not really. See if it were really secret, would I be posting about it, much less posting pictures of it?

Anywho, quite a while back, I bought an Ork Warboss in Finecast, and it has been sitting on my desk for months. Then a couple of nights ago, I decided I wanted to paint him up. So here we go.

I of course I was a dummy, and I primed him before I took any pictures. So please excuse the craptacular photos.

Sky Claw Plasma Pistoleer

Back again with another update. I have really found that sitting down and doing one guy at a time is very easy to do during the week. That being said, I've got five more Sky Claws set up do to, and I am going to try to knock most of them out on the weekend. We'll see how it goes.

Sky Claw Power Fist

My latest Sky Claw has been completed. This guy I knocked out in a couple of hours. As with the Plasma guy, I already had the base done (except the edging) the base coat, highlights and wash on the armor, so there really wasn't much left to do.
