Book Review: Know no Fear

Right on the heels of Deliverance Lost, we have Know no Fear by Dan Abnett, and I was feeling so good about DL, that I knew KnF was going to be a great book, and boy was I right!

This is the story of how the Word Bearers try to destroy/cripple the Ultramarines so that they can't play a part in the siege of Terra. This is still the point of the Heresy where the bad guys know whats going on, but the good guys still have no clue.

At the beginning of the story, the Ultramarines and Word Bearers are joining together to go put down some filthy xenos culture. Everyone assumes that the pairing is so that the two legions can bury the hatchet for the smack-down the Emperor laid upon the Word Bears via the Ultramarines 40 years previous. Little did the Ultramarines know it would be a literal hatchet that was in-fact a power ax buried into someones face!

Book Review: The Outcast Dead

I've been having some bad luck with the Black Library lately. I haven't really liked the last two books I've read. Unfortunately The Outcast Dead is one of those books.

So this is the story of an astropath named Kai Zulane. he has had a bad year due to the fact that the last ship he was on had a Geller field failure and everyone on board died except him and the navigator. Due to the trauma of this, he can't seem to send messages anymore. So he is being sent back to (not yet holy) Terra to see if he can be salvaged as an astropath. If not, hes gonna be tossed into the astronomican.

One of the things I really didn't like about this story was that the main character seemed like a bit of a d-bag. I really just didn't like him. Ever. I have read books where the "protagonist" was kind of unlikable but usually there is some redeeming end to the story. I'm sure the author tried to do that, but I was really just fed up with Kai by the end of the story.

Book Review: Age of Darkness

This book here combines two of the greatest things ever, short stories and the Horus Heresy!

The first story is Rules of Engagement by Graham McNeill. In this story we read about Captain Ventanus of the Ultramarines. He has been charged by his primarch to learn all he can about how to fight Space Marines. This is a pretty story and has a great ending.

Next up is Liar's Due by James Swallow. This is one of the best stories in the book, a small agricultural planet learns that the Emperor is dead and Horus has won. Hijinks ensue! Great read!

Forgotten Sons by Nick Kyme tells the story of two very different Space Marines as they attempt to bargain for the loyalty of the planet Bastion. This story was a bit odd. It felt a bit out of character to me. It felt as as Mr. Kyme was trying to squeeze a square peg into a round hole.

Audio Book Review: Garro: Legion of One.

The latest in the Garro audio short stories, Garro: Legion of One is a pretty damn good tale. Nathanial Garro, former Death Guard, is still on a quest bestowed upon him by Macador the Sigillite. He is gathering others like him. Outcasts from both loyal an traitor legions to join what will be come (one would assume) the Inquisition.

In this book they have traveled to where it all began, Isstvan III. He is on a dead world searching for another to join their group, but he is not alone. He has the Ultramarines Librarian, and the World Eater.
